History of the Quickstep

The Quickstep evolved in the 1920’s from a combination of the Foxtrot, Charleston, Shag, Peabody and One Step. It was standardized by the English in 1927 as a response to the energetic and lively dancing in America during the time.

Characteristics of the Quickstep Dance

The Quickstep has evolved into a dynamic dance with a lot of movement on the dance floor including hops, runs and steps with a lot of momentum and rotation. Advanced dancers can increase the speed of the dance even more by dancing patterns with split beats, such as “quick-and-quick-and-quick-quick-slow”. Even so, the Quickstep is an elegant dance and should be smooth and light.

The tempo of the Quickstep dance is rather brisk as it was developed to ragtime era jazz music which is very fast paced. An example of a classic Quickstep song would be Louis Prima’s “Sing, Sing, Sing”.
